International Women’s Day with Marie Leverton

What’s your name and job title at 6B?

Marie Leverton, Head of Delivery.

What does your role at 6B involve?

I’m responsible for working with the whole business to roll-out Agile ways of working and improved delivery processes. I work with the delivery team, product owners and QA to mentor, manage and upskill our internal teams. I ensure that we maintain margin and deliver projects on time and to budget with great client satisfaction.

What do you love most about your job?

I love working with a team helping others to grow. I like to add value and make sure whatever I do, I create improvement.

How did you first get into the industry?

I was a front-end developer a longggg time ago.

What are some of the common barriers / challenges you have had to overcome to carve out a successful career in tech/in general?

I’ve not come across too many to be honest. One of the biggest barriers is definitely companies wanting to work using Agile practices, but not really changing their mindset to deliver that and still heading towards heavy management structures. A lot of procurement companies can also stop Agile in its paces – sometimes the people on the ground want to work Agile but their procurement department can put the stoppers on.

What advice would you have for someone looking to follow the same career path?

Try and work across multiple technologies and areas to learn as much as you can, and ask plenty of questions. Find out what makes you and others tick. Get qualified, it’s not the be all and end all but a solid understanding of practices and the whys will really help you.

What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

Celebrating all the amazing women who are my friends, family and co-workers.

Who are some of the women that have inspired you during your career?

My mum is an everyday rockstar. I’m fortunate that I have worked alongside some amazing women. Gill Ball at Mediaworks, Melissa Hendry at Ddroid, and Charlotte Moody at Strat7 are all women who I have learnt from and who are also compassionate and kind. I’m also a Guilty Feminist follower, for my regular hit of inspirational women.

How does 6B help promote inclusivity in the workplace?

We have an amazing Talent and Wellbeing Manager, Rachael Midgley, who works hard to make sure that everything from our recruitment and interview process to our work outings are approached by factoring in inclusion.

Are you a woman interested in pursuing a career in tech?

Here at 6B, we’re always on the lookout for fresh talent to bolster our ranks.
