6B’s guide to Google Ads

Have you ever wondered how you can improve your positioning in Google search results? Does your business want more enquiries, but you’re not sure where to start?

Never fear – 6B is here!

In this article, our resident Google Guru addresses some basic Adwords questions for beginners, whilst providing an insight into how ranking high in search results can prove successful for your business.

So, what is Google Ads?

Google Ads, or PPC (Pay Per Click), is a platform created by Google to help businesses advertise themselves across the Google search engine and other search partners.

They work on an ‘ad rank’ basis, which is built on keyword search terms – this allows the user to pay to appear as one of the top result on a Google search for a specific keyword or phrase.

Interesting…tell me more about ‘ad ranking.’

Sure thing! When you set up a Google Ad, a payment is made to Google every time your ad is clicked. The price you pay for each click is called the “cost-per-click” (CPC).

You can choose a maximum bid amount for your ad, or you can opt for this to be automated by Google, who will choose an amount based on recent auctions for a particular keyword.

OK, makes sense so far. So, is this effectively an auction?

In a way, yes – Google Ads looks at all advertisers bidding for the keyword, and then chooses whether this will be auctioned. Google selects which advert to display by reviewing who offers a suitable maximum bid for the keyword, with a good quality score.

This results in the ad appearing on the first results page – which happens in the time it takes for someone to type in their search on Google and see the results (around 0.26 seconds, to be exact!).
